Clue is the American adaptation of the board game Cluedo, which was created by Anthony Ernest Pratt, a solicitor's clerk and part-time clown, in 1943. Pratt reportedly described himself as "an introvert full of ruminations, speculations and imaginative notions." Pratt's wife designed the game board.

Cluedo was originally published in 1949 in the United Kingdom, by Waddingtons. When the Pratt couple went to Waddingtons to pitch their game, they were accompanied by their friends, the Bulls, who had created the game Buccaneer. Parker Brothers first published Clue in the United States, renaming the game because the British board game, Ludo, was less popular in the U.S. Toy company Hasbro has since acquired both Waddingtons and Parker Brothers, and all rights to the board game. Clue is now distributed in over 40 countries around the world.

In 2008, Hasbro licensed certain of its board games, including Clue to Universal Pictures for feature films.
