The object of the board game is to determine who murdered Mr. Boddy. In the books, his name is Reginald and he was married to Bessie Boddy, before her untimely (and somewhat mysterious) death. In the movie, the character of Mr. Boddy is a bit of an enigma, but in the third ending it comes out that it is he who is in fact blackmailing the other guests. Mr. Boddy is already dead in the VCR Game, in which the guests are all fighting over his wills, and it turns out that Sergeant Gray is his illegitimate son with Mrs. White.
In England, Mr. Boddy is known as Dr. Black.
